Picking Up My New MacBook
The delivery was estimated for next Tuesday, but it arrived the day after I ordered my new MacBook Air. I stayed at home, yet I received a message saying the deliverer had attempted delivery, failed, and returned the package to a service office located in Heemskerk. Damn! Rescheduling and redelivery is a paid service (9.9 EUR!), so I had to pick it up myself by bus in the evening. Fortunately, it was not a rainy day. On the way there, two girls talked to me. One showed me a stamp card, which seemed related to a school project. I said, “Ik spreek geen Nederlands. Can you speak English?” She replied, “Ugh…”. They discussed it and one girl said, “Ik spreek geen Engels! (I cannot speak English).” In the end, they gave up and we said goodbye. I realized that Dutch children sometimes cannot speak English, even though Dutch people in general have the best English skills among non-native English-speaking countries. The UPS branch was inside a small local supermarket, which felt unusual to me. Anyway, I received the package without any problem. I remembered staying at a hotel on my birthday a couple of years ago, and I visited the bar I had gone to at that time. I had a beer and French fries. I left within an hour because the bus schedule was limited. While waiting at the bus station, a car stopped and the driver spoke to me. He was the owner of a butcher shop near my house, and I often see him at bars. He asked, “Are you going back to Castricum? You should take a ride.” I had thought he did not like me, so it was a truly surprising and kind offer. I accepted his ride. He said he was returning to his shop after delivering meat. Although I was irritated by UPS, I thanked God because He gave me such a fantastic opportunity. I had forgotten his name, so I asked again. It was Hens. I must engrave his name in my memory. He has three children and two grandchildren. I started setting up my new MacBook Air and cooked spaghetti. I also wrote a letter of appreciation to Hens. The setup was very time-consuming, so I went to bed around 10:30 pm.
