Exhibition Concept:
Pop Art as an instrument for radical change
Art and culture are the cement that holds society together. When politics are busy dividing groups, it is high time for art to also step into the arena.
‘Women in Revolt’ is a film by Andy Warhol, directed by Paul Morrissey in 1971. It is a satirical film about the Women’s Liberation Movement, especially about Valerie Solanas and her SCUM manifesto. Solanas tried to murder Warhol in 1968 and nearly succeeded. For these radical feminists, she symbolized that the King of Pop Art represented everything wrong in the world. However, many artists saw this failed murder attempt as a call to use the Pop Art idiom for radical change.
It seems contradictory that Pop Art, which in the 60s and 70s celebrated consumer culture, is now an instrument to criticize that same society. Artists worldwide are building on Warhol’s legacy to promote women’s rights, the environment, Black Lives Matter, or the fall of a dictator. The Pop Art idiom seems the perfect tool to get the public on your side.
With this exhibition, PLAY room wants to offer a counter-narrative to the global shift to the right. How can we keep dreaming of an ideal society where everyone is equal? How do we connect different groups with each other? The answer from PLAY room is: take action, confront. All with a healthy dose of humor.
I’m exhibiting three new works from my “Let’s Eat, Everyone” series. At the opening reception on the first day, I’ll also be performing a cake-cutting piece.
If you have the chance to come to The Netherlands that day, you must come! I hope you can enjoy the group show. Thank you.
